Two very different “currants”
The word currant covers two unrelated things, and the difference is life-or-death for dogs:

Fresh currants from the garden or greengrocer are ordinary berries: tart, low-calorie and not linked to any specific toxicity. Dried “currants” in baking, scones and fruit bread are miniature raisins — and grapes and raisins can cause acute kidney failure in dogs, with no established safe amount.
How to feed the fresh kind
Rinse them and offer a small handful at most. They’re tart and fiber-rich, so bigger portions tend to come back out as loose stool. Skip jams, cordials and juices — those are sugar delivery vehicles, not fruit.
What to do after a dried-currant mistake
Treat any dried-currant ingestion — including currant buns, mincemeat or trail mix — as you would grapes: call your vet immediately, whatever the amount. Early decontamination and IV fluids are what protect the kidneys; symptoms like vomiting, lethargy and changed urination can arrive after the window for easy treatment has closed.
